A business Coach should offer you a complimentary 15-minute coaching session so both of you can decide if you are a good fit for each other. Your coach is not your buddy or pal, but you must develop strong rapport so you can get the most possible out of your coaching sessions. Of course, it may take some time to develop a high level of trust, but the coach definitely should not give you the heebie-jeebies. If your spidey-sense sounds an alarm during the coaching sessions, you should absolutely acknowledge it, and respond in an appropriate manner.

Speed and Availability – You need a coach who can work at the speed of business now and is easily available when you need them. Most coaching takes place via the phone. We use all the forms of communication that will serve us best and we use it often during the week and during the coaching engagement.

For each piece of information you receive, whether in hard copy or on the computer screen, ask these questions: Does this require action? Can I identify a specific use? Would it be difficult to get again? Is it recent enough to be useful? If the answer to all those questions is “No,” ask one final question: “What’s the worst thing that could happen if I don’t have this piece of paper?” If you can live with your answer — toss or recycle it! Take a look around your office. Do you see unused equipment, books you’ll never use again, drawers full of unidentified paper, or outdated inventory? If so, you’ll experience a new sense of energy if you get rid of it.

Don’t be afraid to e-mail them with questions or find out if they have free content such as a newsletter. Find out as much about this person as you can. Treat each potential candidate as if they were applying for a job with your company and hire who you think would help you the most.
